In the fall of 1974, a small group of Fairfield County equestrian women explored the effectiveness of therapeutic riding. In-depth investigation into its benefits, well-established over a long and successful history in England and Europe, convinced them that this powerful form of therapy should be made available in their communities.
In September of 1975, the first Pegasus program was established at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, Connecticut. Beginning with six students with physical disabilities, the founders were determined to bring the benefits and joys of therapeutic horseback riding to their community. The program at Ox Ridge was an unqualified success and inspired the development of eight other chapters throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties.
Today, Pegasus provides equine-assisted activities and therapies to more than 200 children and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities. We currently run programs at six chapters: Corgi Hollow Farm in Newtown, Connecticut; Fox Hill Farm in Pleasantville, New York; Kelsey Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut; New Canaan Mounted Troop in New Canaan, Connecticut; Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, Connecticut; and our 20-acre Pegasus Farm in Brewster, New York.
All Pegasus instructors are certified by NARHA (formerly the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) and have first aid and CPR training. Our instructors are assisted by scores of dedicated volunteers; without this vital partnership, our program could not exist. For more information on how to become a volunteer, click our “Volunteer with Pegasus” link on the main menu.
Pegasus Therapeutic Riding has been an accredited NARHA Premier Center since 1997. NARHA establishes industry standards for program safety, instructor training and certification, and insurance provisions. Of the nearly 700 NARHA member centers throughout the world, approximately 200 are accredited Premier Centers.
