Our History

Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, Inc. is a non-profit, volunteer-based agency that brings the unique benefits of therapeutic horseback riding to people with disabilities. In the fall of 1974, a small group of Fairfield County equestrian women explored the effectiveness of therapeutic riding. In-depth investigation into its benefits, well established over a long and successful history in England and Europe, convinced them that this powerful form of therapy should be made available in their communities. In September of 1975, the first Pegasus program was established at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club in Darien, Connecticut. The program at Ox Ridge was an unqualified success and inspired the development of eight other chapters throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties.

Today, Pegasus provides therapeutic riding and other equine-assisted activities to more than 200 children and adults with physical, mental and emotional disabilities, including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, visual impairments, autism, Down Syndrome and numerous other learning and developmental challenges. Programs run year round at six chapters in New York and Connecticut. NARHA-certified professional instructors with First Aid & CPR certifications, multiple staff members, hundreds of devoted volunteers, and dozens of trusty therapy horses form the core of Pegasus, which remains one of the leading programs of its kind in the United States. Pegasus is a Premiere Accredited Facility, accredited by NARHA, the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.
