ABOUT THE HORSE HANDLER WORKSHOP
Being an effective horse handler/leader is essential to the well-being of our herd. As you know, horses are creatures of habit and thrive on consistency, both of which are not always present in the life of Pegasus horses. Our amazing equine partners have many different students with a wide range of challenges. They are handled by several staff members and volunteers each day, and they have a number of different leaders over the course of a program week. We strive to keep our horses healthy and content, and providing consistent handling/leading skills is a big part of that process.
Staff continues to work hard to understand what makes each of our horses tick, and how best to keep each distinctive personality happy and motivated while joined to us via a lead line. Your participation in herd-handling skills training will be an effective way to get on the same page as our staff.
Whether you are an experienced horse handler or are just getting started, our volunteer workshops will not only provide you with some helpful insights, they will help you provide a positive experience for our incredible horses and ponies. It will allow us to understand which horse and leaders work well together in program, individualize techniques for each horse, and improve our horses’ experience working with different people.
You can also help us evaluate new horses here on trial and help prepare them for their new role in program. Following your participation, the teaching staff member will place you in a group that includes the horses/ponies you are most qualified to lead at that time. Workshops will be held on a regular basis, which will provide you an opportunity to continue to develop your skills and allow you to advance to handling/leading the more challenging members of our herd.
